Hello Faithful Readers!
As you can tell, P.I. Jane looks a little different. It’s longer, we got this new color thing going on, it’s got ‘splosions. This is that new beginning we alluded to in the last panel of strip #100. And that new beginning is sort of like the old beginning. Let me explain.
Three years ago, Greg and I wrote a pilot called P.I. Jane. It was received fairly well, and we decided to turn it into a graphic novel. We found an artist, Mr. Tony Maldonado, who not only helped us with our pitch, but also convinced us to make a webcomic to help us learn the comic-making process, as well as build an audience. And so we changed the format, wrote new scripts, and for the past two years we’ve been producing P.I. Jane the webcomic. It was shorter, goofier, and served as a prequel to the events in the original graphic novel. It was a fun experiment that helped us grow as artists, writers, and a team.
Now, we feel confident enough to move on to producing our graphic novel. And we will be sharing it with you, right here, one page at a time. Below is a sample from our original comic pitch written three years ago. We’ll be posting all six of the sample pages for you to compare and contrast with the new pages each week, starting with the original Meet Jane Day.
We hope you enjoy.
This post is for the ladies, especially those who are looking to contribute to some all-girl comic anthologies! The Indie Ladies Comic Anthology has posted their submission guidelines for their next book, which is set to premiere at the 2013 S.P.A.C.E. convention. I’m looking forward to picking up a copy of their 2012 edition when it goes on sale next month.
For those of you in the Chicago area, please consider checking out Ladies Night at Graham Cracker Comics in the loop. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month from 6pm to 8pm, with our discussions moderated by the lovely Megan Bryd of Comic Book Candy. At our next meeting, on June 6th, we’ll be discussing putting together a copy of our own anthology with comics, recipes, and X-Men fan fiction? Come find out on June 6th!
It never fails, I always end up getting sick just before, or during c2e2. Last year I had bronchitis, this year I had a wicked sinus infection that kept me away from the table for most of the weekend (as well as the Jane Espenson panel #SoMad). But Tony and Greg held down the fort like champs with our pal Elliott Junkyard, from Vampire Kitty and Spacebat.
Undercaffienated and full of nerves, I did manage to make it to my Womanthology panel, which was so much fun. I just can’t say enough about these lovely ladies. Candice and Jessica did such a great job organizing everything. And despite competing with John Barrowman’s panel, we had a very good turnout with excellent questions from the crowd. Jessica has posted video of the panel on her blog, so please check it out!

Sadly, I wasn’t able to catch up with some of my favorite people at the con, but hopefully I will the next time around. Big thanks to everyone who stopped by and bought the new Jane book, as well as Womanthology. You guys are the bestest!
Uhm, are you guys ready to rock the best con in the midwest? Because we’re tooootally not! But rest assured, we are working through the night to get ready for our favorite convention. As you can see, Team Jane will be stationed at booth 692 all weekend, selling Volume 2 of P.I. Jane. And we have some special signings/events/panels lined up. So please, add the following to your schedule!
- Lauren will be signing at the Chicago Comics booth on Saturday from 10-10:45
- Lauren will be on the Womanthology panel on Saturday from 11:00-12:00
- Tony will be signing at the Chicago Comics Booth from 10:00-12:00 on Sunday
- Lauren will be signing at the Challengers booth from 12:00-1:00 on Sunday
- All weekend, the P.I. Jane booth will be a stop on the ALA scavenger hunt. This is a great activity for the kids. Especially if they like prizes!
That’s all for now, but stay tuned for updates. If you’re reading this, please know, we’d love to see you at c2. We have the best readers, and it’s always great to see your face.
