Aw, yeah. Here we go. Our first “fantasy” page and our first splash page. This would also be reworked and used as the vol. 1 book cover, our convention banner, and probably a few other places. See? We’re totally eco-friendly!
Page four. 66% of the pages we had completed. Why only 6 (well, plus a cover)? Most publishers we had looked into that accept(s/ed) submissions usually required 5-6 pages as a sample to get the gist of your ability and show you can a) tell a story and b) your artist can draw sequential art. If you think drawing is just drawing, you’re dead wrong. There are many fantastic artists who excel at covers, pin-ups, posters and prints but that skill doesn’t translate to the storytelling side (and vice versa). It’s not easy; the good ones (and Tony) just make it look that way. However, as a letterer w/ minimal integrity, i hate myself for making the first panel bubble tangent against the right wall. Self-flagellation imminent…
Ugh.. the letters on these pages make me cringe. I was (and am) still learning at the time and it shows. YIKES. Version 2.0 (above) is far better. Respectable, even. Why did I talk like Top Cat just then? Forget it, Jake– it’s the Innerwebs…
Hey, guys.. This is page 2 of the ‘original’ graphic novel/comic book version of P.I. Jane. Random fact: we needed a name to call these pages because it was getting confusing when we would talk Jane and had two different versions going side-by-side. We landed on “Murray” for… whatever reason. Gearing up for C2E2 2011, we printed mini books with the first 6 pages as a sort of demo book for all the publishing mucky-mucks we were sure we’d schmooze and win over. The night before at 1am, we were at a Kinko’s and it was dead and the employee just gave us these books. Like 25 copies that we’d later learn would’ve cost like $200. In that employee’s honor, we renamed these pages and this demo book “Portia.”
These are the Portia Murray chronicles.
